General Information:

The BC Recorder Society has maintained a library since 1962. The collection comprises over 1,500 titles consisting of sheet music published from the late 1950s to the present day. There is also some unpublished material. Periods include the Middle Ages to the present, with Renaissance and Baroque predominating.

The collection is principally for trio, quartet, and quintet ensembles, however there are solos, duets, works for larger groups, and double choir. Parts and full scores are available. Most of the music is arranged for lower to upper intermediate players.

The Library welcomes donations of published recorder sheet music (no photocopies please) and funds for the purchase of recorder music.

Access to the Library is a benefit to members at no charge.

How to Use the Catalogue

The catalogue is formatted as a spreadsheet.  The easiest way to browse it is to download the file and use your own program (such as Excel, Numbers, or Google Spreadsheets) to sort by any of the headers

The most useful headers to sort by are:
  • Title
Titles are entered in the language of publication, with initial numbers entered also as figures e.g. Deux sonates also appears as 2 sonates. When sorted, all titles beginning Deux or 2 are listed together
  • Type
Refers to the number of players, and is indicated by a number e.g. 4 = a quartet
  • Instrumentation
Refers to the types of instruments the music is set for, and is indicated by a letter e.g.
N = Sopranino

S = Soprano or Descant
A = Alto or Treble
T = Tenor
B =  Bass
GB = Great Bass
C = Contra

There is a space between each voice, but two or more of the same instrument are entered without spaces
e.g. S A T B = Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Bass;  SS = 2 sopranos
  • Composer
Historical publishers are treated as composers e.g. Pierre Attaignant,  Susato, and Playford. "Various" is used when a work includes pieces by more than one composer. An empty cell means the work is either traditional or anonymous.
