Lewis Baratz

Harpsichordist and recorder player Lewis R. Baratz has performed with The Academy of Sacred Drama, Bethlehem Baroque, Brandywine Baroque, The Queens Consort, Voices Chorale, Vox Ama Deus, and La Fiocco, which he founded in 2009.
As a music historian, he authored over 20 articles on a wide range of topics, including 15th-century dance music, 17th-century keyboard music, biographical, archival, and manuscript studies, basso continuo, the choirboys of the Brussels Collegiate Church c. 1550 to 1793, numerous entries in The New Grove Dictionary of Music, and an edition of the instrumental music of Petrus Hercules Brehy (1673-1737), published by A-R Editions earlier this year.
Lewis was a Fulbright Scholar and Fellow of the Belgian American Educational Foundation. He taught music history and theory at Mercer County Community College and Seton Hall University, and currently teaches harpsichord, recorder, and directs the Chamber Orchestra, at Lafayette College.
Lewis is currently music director of the Highland Park Recorder Society, through which he presents his monthly international online seminar in recorder playing.
During Covid-19 downtime, Lewis’ interest in Colonial American music led him to an exploration of Irish traditional music, and he is learning to play the bodhrán (Irish frame drum) and tin whistle.
