At their request, Friday afternoon was devoted to three very different private coaching sessions taken by three groups. The performing group, Bergamasca, worked on playing and performing technique, The duo Merrie Accord studied the intricacies of medieval music and a solo player had a class for beginner chalumeau. This is the first time we have offered coaching in conjunction with a workshop.
Phil and Gayle Neuman are well-known for their knowledge of ‘Early Music’ but they are also world-class experts in Ancient Music, music stretching back from pre-Medieval times to the very earliest days of our civilization in Sumer, Egypt, Greece and Rome. How the music of Ancient Greece, its theory and practice and even its notated music, influenced western music through the following centuries, especially since its rediscovery in the Renaissance, was the guiding leitmotif. It was delivered in a gentle and unassuming manner that was far from intimidating but full of enthusiasm.
The audience of 75 received an exhibition not just of art and knowledge but of warm and generous performers.
