While you may not be interested in tossing the sheet music away, adding the ability to play by ear is a great addition to your musical toolbox.
According to music studio.ca, “ Whether they know it or not, students that teach themselves to play by ear have trained themselves to recognize and anticipate melodies and other structures that are common in musical compositions. This, as you might expect, makes learning new songs much easier.” Knowing the music you are playing by ear gives you the freedom to look up from the page to connect with your ensemble partners and your conductor. It provides security in case you get lost in a score, and in addition, not needing to follow the score as closely, your mind is free to put attention into the phrasing, articulations, and musicality of your playing. In this 4 session class, certified Suzuki teacher, Andrea MacDonald, will get your feet wet in learning to play by ear. Using functional ear training, and a step by step approach to recognizing intervals and working out melodies, you will quickly progress from simple folk songs to Mozart and Bach. This is a pilot program and if successful and popular it may continue. Enrolment is limited to 10 people in order to ensure individual attention. Students will need to purchase practice recordings and download a free app from either the Apple or Android store. If you have questions or wonder if this class is appropriate for you, please call Andrea at 604-339-3375. |
